“Why Should I Care Right Now?” 3 Lessons from Clay That Are Changing How We Build Pipeline

At Barnett Strategies, we don’t adopt tools because they’re trending. We adopt them when they produce growth results for our clients. Clay has earned its spot. Over the past several months it has become central to how we research accounts, enrich data, and launch outbound programs, and we’ve doubled down on getting better at it.

As a team, we’ve made a real investment in improving our Clay knowledge, participating in Clay Cohorts, hands-on programs where we build live workflows alongside other GTM operators. We also meet regularly to go over best use-cases for new Clay tools and specific applications that can benefit our client programs. And on October 8th, Chris heads to San Francisco for Sculpt 2026, Clay’s GTM conference at Pier 48.

Here are three lessons we’ve learned so far that are already changing how we build pipeline for clients.

Lesson 1: Your value prop has one job

Early in our Clay training, one piece of advice stuck with us: your value prop has to answer a single question immediately. “Why should I care right now?”

That question exposes a weakness in how most B2B teams build their target lists. Traditionally, ICPs have been framed around basic firmographics: industry, headcount, revenue, geography. Those filters tell you who could buy. They don’t tell you who needs a solution today.

With Clay, we don’t have to settle for surface-level filters. We can enrich directly for the root problems and real-time triggers that create urgency, such as a leadership change, a new funding round, a hiring spike in a specific department, a new market entry, or a compliance deadline. When outreach is built on a trigger, the “why now” answers itself.

This builds on our ICP framework, where trigger events are one of five complementary lenses designed to help tighten your ICP. Clay turns that lens from a planning exercise into something we can actually operationalize at scale.

Lesson 2: Verify before you send, or pay for it later

Reaching buyers in industries with strict IT firewalls is tough. High bounce rates will quickly burn your domain reputation, and once that happens, even your good emails land in spam.

Using Clay, we’ve built multi-step verification and enrichment workflows that validate emails before a campaign ever launches. Rather than relying on a single data source, the workflow checks multiple providers in sequence, confirms addresses against verification services, and flags risky or catch-all domains before they touch a sequence.

The result: lower bounce rates, protected deliverability, and actual pipeline in industries where inbox placement is notoriously hard to earn.

The lesson here is bigger than email hygiene. Deliverability is a revenue problem disguised as a technical one. If your messages never reach the inbox, your copy, your offer, and your targeting don’t matter.

Lesson 3: The tool doesn’t replace the playbook

The market has noticed what Clay can do. The company recently announced a $115 million raise, and when a tool transforms daily GTM workflows the way Clay has for us and our clients, that kind of traction is no surprise.

But here’s our candid take: Clay makes good strategy faster. It does not make weak strategy good. Send the wrong offer to a perfect list, and you’ve just disappointed your best prospects more efficiently. The teams winning with Clay pair it with fundamentals: a tight ICP, a clear value prop, a relevant call to action, and disciplined testing.

That’s why we’re learning it as a team rather than delegating it to one “Clay person.” Everyone who touches a client program understands what the data can do and where human judgment still wins.

See You at Sculpt 2026

Tactical plays like these are exactly why Chris is heading to San Francisco for Sculpt on October 8th. From AI agents and data enrichment to advanced workflow orchestration, it’s a chance to see what’s next on the product roadmap and trade notes with the GTM community.

If you’ll be at Pier 48, Chris would love to connect. Reach out on LinkedIn or email chris@barnettstrategies.com to set up a time. Event details are at sculpt.clay.com.

Your Next Step

If your outbound program feels busy but isn’t producing pipeline, start here:

  • Rewrite your value prop so it answers “Why should I care right now?” in the first sentence.
  • Add at least one real-time trigger to your targeting criteria, beyond firmographics.
  • Audit your bounce rate before your next campaign launch, not after.
